45

NATURE OF WORK:

The term voice-over refers to a production technique where a disembodied voice is broadcast live or pre-recorded in radio, television, film, theatre and/or presentation. Someone who also appears on-screen in other segments may speak the voice-over or a specialist voice actor may perform it. Voice-over is also commonly referred to as “off camera” commentary. The term voice-over can also refer to the actual voice actor who performed the recording. The terms voice actor, narrator, voice artist, announcer, dubbing artist are all similarly used.

A voice over is a narrative technique in which an unseen actor’s lines are heard over visual elements in a movie or commercial. The narrator of a documentary or the announcer introducing a talk-show host is considered a voice over artist.

In film, the filmmaker places the sound of a human voice (or voices) over images shown on the screen that may or may not be related to the images being shown. In radio, voice-overs are an integral part of the success of the radio programme. Although the announcer holds the prestige and claims all the glory, it is the voice-over artist that is the real drive behind the show.A working voice over artist is not always expected to create his or her own interpretation of the script. The director of the film or commercial will often suggest various ways to read the lines in order to match the needs of the client or audience. This requires some degree of patience on the part of voice over artists, who may spend hours in a recording studio rereading individual lines until the director is satisfied. Sometimes a line could be changed if it proves too difficult to read or runs over the time allotted, but more often than not, a voice over artist must create a unique sound from whatever the client wants to emphasize in the commercial.

GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES

A dubbing or voice over artist should be fluent in the language but also versatile enough to match inflection, lip sync, tone & pauses to synchronize with the gestures and body language of the character in the original soundtrack or visuals. Clarity of your voice, clarity of your diction, dialogue delivery and emotion in your voice are the key differentiators of a known voice over professional. Voice-over is required when an audio in a particular language needs to be replaced with an audio in a different language. Mostly advertisements, corporate presentations, computer-based-training modules, online training, documentaries, movies, etc. require voice-over to enable use of these items in a different region or country.

The voice-over artists are selected based on their gender, age, voice tone and style. Voice over work is usually found through open auditions, talent agency representation or an introductory voice reel containing the candidate’s best work to date.

MARKET SCENARIO:

A talented voice over artist can have a very long and lucrative career, but there is a significant amount of competition for assignments. Many screen and television actors with distinctive voices are highly in demand for commercial voice over work. Advertising agencies typically listen to hundreds of voices looking for the one that most perfectly fits what they are trying to convey. In other words, It’s nice work if you can get it, but be aware, It’s a very a competitive environment.

Many voiceover artists pursue voiceover work through advertising agencies while making their living working as an on-air personality within the broadcast industry. With the globe shrinking, voicing from in house studios as well as outsourcing of voice over artistes is a common phenomenon and one that is enabling the industry to provide a plethora of opportunities for aspirants of this field.

Nerd or a stud………Check your student type!

College students are often categorized by their friends depending upon their individual traits. Some are total book worms while others are total freak out types. However there is yet another group which falls in the category of balancing the two things. It comes to them naturally. They work hard and party hard and live life to the fullest.

Yqworld has categorized students according to their tastes, inclinations and aptitudes. Check out where exactly you fit in.

The Hotties

Short skirts, funky hair, batting eyelashes, pouty lips, heavy make-up and stilettos some love to flash their looks and bodies. These are the kinds of gals who come to college as if they are about to participate in a fashion show and take the guys for a ride. Their look says it all. They are an object of envy from all quarters. They enjoy every look that they get from the opposite sex. Not just that, some girls like to stay away from such dazzling damsels whereas some love to join the bandwagon. The oomph factor gets them in the groove.

The Page 3 Types

‘Any excuse for a party’ is their motto; be it birthdays, deadline days, or just because it’s a Wednesday. They love to be the centre of attraction and be in the limelight. They spend their days in bed or in the pub or both. Their attendance to lectures or seminars weighs heavily on the amount of fun they have had the night before.Though they love the student life it could be for a different purpose(?). However, during deadline week these Page 3 Types can be found in the library from opening to close. They cram their work in and can often be seen running to hand in their work a minute before its due.

The Regulars

The Regulars can be found in places like well, you have guessed it right in front of the computer at home or even in pubs enjoying themselves. Such types of students are very conscious about their studies and also attend major nights out. They are usually described as; “Oh! She’s very scholarly. She can answer all the academic questions. And also ask her about Bollywood/Hollywood and ooh! She knows it all”. Such people can be very useful when the exams are approaching and are usually the helpful types. They are guaranteed to have plentiful list of ideas, will be great with computers and would insist on taking the bulk of the work load.

The Geeks

Usually this species of students are on their own or lagging behind a group of people desperate to keep up. Bounding along with their back packs on two shoulders (something which can only be carried off by certain naturally-cool people), they can be seen chasing lecturers and panicking about deadlines and exams. Geeks are also the ones to go to when you are doing work at university because, they will have a bulging pencil case full of pens, pencils, staplers, glues, scissors, and pretty much any other item you could possibly need.

They would always be in a tearing hurry and most of the time stressed out. They would be only thinking of finishing off their paperwork in time, get the signatures and do all the submissions lest they might lose out on marks.

The Casuals

Such students are never on time for a lecture. They leisurely walk in the class room and expect the lecturers to welcome them. When that doesn’t happen they look confused as if “What the heck man? Why do they want to ruin my day”? They always wear a ‘cool’ look and their clothes are in total shambles. Their hair is tousled and or shaved off, both of which are done for convenience.
